competition: Win a signed Salvager minicard

Hi everyone, Son of Salvager here.

I was attending the premiere screening of the Dr Feelgood music bio-pic Oil City Confidential (A fantastic new film by Julien Temple featuring a cameo by the Salvager himself) with Rico last friday and when his back was turned his moustache slipped me a hastily scrawled note pleading for my help.

Apparently Rico's been giving his moustache short-shrift lately whenever they're out of the public eye, subjecting it to regular soup drenchings and keeping it locked inside his jeep during the hot summer months whilst Rico galavants round boot fairs and scrap yards all day long (ok so he cracks the window a little but still...).

Well his Tache has had enough of playing second fiddle all the time and is convinced that it's really him that the people love and not in fact Rico, so he asked me to help him sign up an account on twitter so he can find out just how much you guys love him by posting any rumours you might have heard about him. he even promised to send some of the best replies one of the signed minicards he nicked out of Rico's pocket the other day.

To show Rico's Tache just how much you think of him go to http://www.twitter.com/RicosTache and follow his account then post up any rumours you might have heard about him. like this...

"I heard @RicosTache turned down the original role for Burt Reynolds moustache in Magnum P.I."
You can post as many as you like and there's no real closing date for this. Winners will be picked sporadically. no cash or scrap alternative to the prize. winners will be contacted for their address. The cost of coach bolts may go down as well as up.

Just signed up as a judge for Shed of the Year 2009

My shed-obsessed mate Wilco runs a fantastic site called Readers Sheds which features all kinds of weird and wonderful user submitted/owned sheds and each year during their official Shed Week he runs a competition for 'Shed of the Year' where they pick some of the best sheds submitted to the site over the past year.

This years event is fast approaching and I'm happy to say he's asked me back again to join the judging panel with the likes of Chris Evans, Sarah Beeny & Trevor Baylis in overseeing the proceedings.

If you have an interesting shed why not enter it into the competiton? all the details on how to enter can be found here.

or if you just fancy a bit of a mooch around the site you can find it at http://www.readersheds.co.uk/

you can also keep up with all shed related goings on by following @UncleWilco on Twitter. likewise don't forget you can now follow me on there @ricodaniels if you aren't already.

A Quick update... Twitter and THTC

I've been out and about recently so haven't been able to post much online so I thought I'd give you a quick update on whats been happening.

First of all I want to say thanks to all of the people who've been signing up to my facebook groups and sending me friend requests. It's always nice to hear from fans of the show and facebook is a pretty handy way for me to do that. But I've also been hearing from a lot of you that don't want to use facebook for all sorts of reasons so my boy has set me up with a twitter account where you can follow some of my less blog worthy thoughts and catch up with what i'm doing.

the url is http://www.twitter.com/ricodaniels (some git's already taken the username 'salvager'... a pox on their house). Feel free to follow me and i'll do my best to tweet or whatever they call it whenever I get a spare minute.

I've also been busy writing bits for a new book idea I'm working on. I can't reveal much about it just yet but as soon as I can you'll be the first to hear about it, it should be a belter when it's done though.

Now I'm going to do something I don't normally do and give my mate Gavs company a bit of a plug. it's called 'The Hemp Trading Co' and they makes some wicked clothing made from hemp, bamboo & cotton blends taken from renewable sources in factories certified to offer their workers fair working conditions (unlike the sweatshops like those that make all that £3 clothing for the big companies like tescos). The designs may not be to the tastes of all of the visitors to my site but they have some great politically concious t-shirts including one of the best t-shirt slogans ever

George Bush & Son ~ Family Butchers
- est 1989 -

but luckily for all of us that one no longer applies as of a few months back.

his site is http://www.thtc.co.uk and it's well worth a butchers (no pun intended). even if it's not your cup of tea one of their t-shirts would make a real trendy gift for a youngster (I know my boy has a wardrobe full of them and he's got his fingers on the pulse when it comes to this sort of thing).

until the next update, stay lucky.

and now for a musical interlude...

I'm currently back in the UK for a spell to visit some family and go to a few meetings and when I get back I like to check out some live music. On Monday I went along to watch my mate Leo Smith play his first set with musical outfit Lil' Lost Lou. My boy came along and took a couple videos on his new fangled pocket camcorder. It's not the best quality in the world because of the light but it gets the job done.

He's now uploaded them to my brand new shiny youtube channel (shameless plug: http://www.youtube.com/thesalvager/) which is definately worth subscribing to so you can get a notification when I post anything new up in the future.

and as a little bonus here's a quick clip of me and Leo both jamming on our harps in the street outside the bar drawing some strange looks from passers by.

It's been a long time coming

but Rico finally has an online version of his award winning advertisement for the second series of The/Le Salvager.

We're also working on getting some more videos uploaded shortly. With a little bit of luck we'll be able to get the 'Flaming Crotch' blooper that was recently shown on It'll be alright on the night. I'll keep you posted.

Also Rico finally reached the 100 fan marker on his facebook fan page over the weekend. If you are on Facebook you should definately join his page which can be found at http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Salvager/17316436596 (you will need to sign in to facebook to join his page).

Kind hearted soul Michael McHugh has also started up a pressure group on Facebook demanding Discovery commission a 3rd series of the Salvager. Which you can check out at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=42715702902

Merry Christmas

Another year passes and it seems that apart from the now notorious FLAMING CROTCH blooper featured on "It'll be alright on the night" I am fast becoming Discovery Real Times' answer to "Only Fools and Horses" given the frequency they show my old programs over Christmas. Luckily a lot of you guys seem to like the repeat shows and I always seem to get another wave of new viewers which is great.

I must apologise again for the makeshift site you've arrived at and I have to reassure you all that there is a new site in the offing that seems to be reliant on the imminent arrival of Broadband in my tiny village. France Telecom told me it was first arriving almost 4 years ago so I'll believe it when I actually see it.

I have managed to Salvage almost the whole of the crashed website but it sits in a folder of over 50 megs. I have trouble uploading anything more than 150Kbps with the stone age dial-up system endured by myself and 3% of the French population. We're just a little too remote. Luckily a benevolent local group has stumped up 80% of the cash needed to install a satellite system. The mast is in place and we're just waiting for the satellite guys to fit our wireless receivers when we should be up and running. I think I'll miss all the endless waiting for uploads. Yeah right!!
We will get a system a hundred times faster for under half the price so there wont be a lot of sentimental hankering for telephone systems of the recent past. I have not been idle however, I've been busy beavering away on a book that I hope will have far more useful content than your average TV spin-off. As well as working through about a dozen completely new builds I will have useful chapters on free building material, axe throwing, household paint making, gardens, suppliers, foraging etc etc.
I am doing this completely off my own bat and still have to interest a publisher. I ain't actually approached any of them yet but if you like the idea of a book please drop a line saying something along those lines to salvagerbook@gmail.com.

If it all comes off then I'll give all those who took the trouble to leave a note the opportunity to get personalised copies later. I also welcome mail at salvager@gmail.com if you just wanna send me a message.

Anyways, enjoy the rest of your holiday and a have great New Year.

Sorry this site seems down for so long ,but I was ,frankly ,depressed about losing all the stuff I'd written .Luckily ,one of you guys had the site saved so with any luck I can get the thing back up. There are some articles written by me available in the current and last three issues of Brit Chopper if you can find it. A search on the Brit Chopper website should give all the info needed to get hold of a copy . www.britchopper.co.uk . Tell em i sent you .Believe me I wouldn't write for it if it wasn't a cracking mag. I am working on what i think is a worthy outline for a new show that I hope will wring a bit of production cash out of some unsuspecting tv company but that remains to be seen. Everyones getting careful with their cash. Still fingers crossed and do keep those emails coming. I try to answer them all. Home again this week. Cant wait to get a decent noiseless nights sleep. See you guys

Well after a pretty spectacular hard drive failure we've managed to lose the old version of the site and the server it was sitting on. So for now we're moving operations to blogspot/blogger so please bear with us while I get the site tarted up a little and also teach the old man how to login and post on this new system.

Normal service will resume shortly... salvagers honour!
